Riverside RAR 1-1 Willington Youth Whites

RIVERSIDE GRAB POINT AT DEATH !!!!
After the weekends exploits away to Blackpool, where we managed to convert a Geordie to a Mackem fan, to which we have a photographic evidence and the fact the lads played nine games in two days and had two late nights these fixtures probably came around to soon for them.
Both games were tight affairs and Riverside had a goal disallowed in the first game, when a shot from Jacob crossed the line but the referee did not agree and the goal was not allowed. East Durham broke the deadlock but their was a hint of did the ball go through the side netting or not but that's football I suppose. The lads rallied well and probably deserved at least an equaliser for their efforts but it was not to be.
Against Willington, the lads again went a goal down but showed resilience by continuing to play football and having a go. With time running out, Riverside won a corner and Kurtis saw Joe in space within the box and placed a super corner in and Joe scored with 10 seconds to go for the point they deserved.

RIVERSIDE SHAKE UP THE BIG BOYS !!!!
Riverside were now coming into the fixtures against the top teams in the Premier League so this would be a great test of how far we have come over the past twelve months or so. The lads started against our old friends Whiteleas who have beaten us twice in the league already so the boys knew they were up for a great game. The game started at a frantic pace with not many clear cut chances either side, the closest Riverside came in the first half was when Joe turned at hit the foot of the post and Whiteleas scrambled it away. The second half saw both defences stand up to whatever was thrown at them and both keepers were in tremendous form. Whiteleas nearly nicked it late on when a free header went agonizingly wide for them, but relief to the support of the RAR. We only had the one game today and everybody applied themselves excellently which was commented on by a parent from Whiteleas who complimented the lads on their display at the end of the game which was a great gesture.
Riverside had two games on the Monday night, the first one against a team who will be finishing at the end of the season as they all play at Darlington Academy. With that in mind and the fact that they have not lost for what seems forever the boys were quick into their stride. After soaking up early pressure, RAR went on the offensive and went close several times causing a few anxious looks from Redby. In fact it was Riverside who took the lead through some great work in the middle of the park, the ball found its way to Joe, who laid off the ball to Jack who in turn just thumped it past the helpless keeper for one nil. However, joy was shortlived when just before half time Redby bungled in a equaliser to level the scores at one each. The second half was end to end but from one of our corners, Redby broke, and their striker was one on one and finished to give Redby the lead and the win in a very close encounter. Riverside nearly nabbed an equaliser at the end but it was not to be.
Our second game saw all the hardwork from the previous two games pay dividends as RAR thumped Boldon four nil. The lads carried on with a pace to the game which was to fast for Boldon and first half goals from Joe and Jacob made the points secure. The second half carried on as the first finished with further goals from Joe and Jack securing an emphatic win.
To the squad of players, whether you are helping out in goal, defence, midfield or striker you have played two of the hardest teams in the league and came away with praise not just from me but the opposing supporters which you can all take confidence from. Keep up the good work !!!!

BACK TO BACK WINS IN PREMIER LEAGUE !!!
Riverside recorded back to back wins in today's Premier League fixtures and some of the football that was played was outstanding. The first half of the the first game was probably some of the best football ever played by Riverside, bearing in mind, the strength of the opposition, Washington at the start of the days play were fourth in the league. Every player played their part to the maximum and the football was as free flowing as when Man U thumped the Mags 6 nil at Old Trafford.
Riverside opened the scoring when a defence splitting ball saw Jack come in from the wing and nonchantly chipped the keeper to make it one nil. Riverside should have gone further ahead as they enjoyed themselves in a super first half. The second half saw them double their lead when Joe Armstrong thundered in the second to secure the points and his 40th ever Riverside goal. Kurtis was introduced for his debut and slotted in very well on the right showing some nice touches and good pace and Callum came on to add steel on the left side. It should have been more comfortable but Washington valiantly kept fighting and reduced the deficit with only minutes to go and they held on for a deserved three points.
The second game saw us up against a strong SAFC 24/7 team but the boys again came out with the points after another hard game. The last two games between the sides saw the RAR lose both games and concede six so it was nice to turn the tide so to say. All the players were pumped up and both teams closed the ball down well. The opening goal came courtesy of Jack Wilkie's 50th goal for the club and it was a screamer into the top corner. This gave us more confidence and both Jacob and Ethan went close with shots to test 24/7's goal. The second half was always going to be tough and SAFC equalized after only three minutes with a well taken shot. This inspired both teams to just attack and through the blizzard of hail the ball fell kindly to Joe who unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Riversides two other new signings of Ryan 'Babel' Armstrong and Ryan 'George' Beston came on to introduce fresh legs and won some timely interceptions. The final whistle went and the points were in the bag and everyone had played their part. Every player, started or from the bench, can be proud of today's performance and to me it has been a journey from Jan 2007 to get back into this division and today you all arrived. Four of the next five games are against the big boys so we will see how far we have actually gone by the way these games unfold, but for the time being - enjoy………it is what the game is all about…

DERBY DAY SEES RAR SECURE THE POINTS !!!!!
Riverside had just the one game today against our other Riverside team and strangely to say the atmosphere was…..strange. I had expected more of derby feel to the match and loads more encouragement from the touchline but it was subdued. The boys however were not perturbed by that and went about their business with an emphatic four nil win.
Jack opened the scoring after fine work from Joe, holding the ball up well and releasing his colleague on the wing. His shot was to hard to handle and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Jacob then added a second when he burst through the middle and found himself one on one with the keeper and he was never going to miss from there. However, his second of the day was a screamer, with his back to the goal all of twenty yards out, Jacob on the half volley turned and struck and unstoppable shot into the top corner. The look on his face told the rest - I think he was happy with that one and rightly so. Joe then added a fourth from a pin point cross and it was nice to give everyone a run out and rotate all eight of the outfield players.
The team looked very solid today and its pleasing one or two players learning new positions in anticipation of going to 11 a side next season. All bodes well for the future so lets keep up the hard work.
15 March 2008
Riverside RAR 1-0 Elemore Boys
( Joe Armstrong )
Fulwell FC 2-1 Riverside RAR
( Jack Wilkie )
RIVERSIDE RECORD FIRST WIN IN PREMIER !!!
Riversides first win of the season came courtesy of a great goal from Joe Armstrong. The boys started well and went close several times to taking the lead. They looked very confident on the ball from defence through to attack and played some lovely football in the process with some great passing along the way. When the goal finally arrived mid way through the first half this gave the boys extra confidence and in fairness they could have extended their lead and made the game safe but there is no easy teams in this division. Elemore went close on a couple of occasions but the boys held out for the three points.
Our next game saw us play Fulwell, who finished fifth in the league in the first half of the season, so it was always going to be a good test. The boys battled hard but found themselves one nil down after six minutes with a calm finish in the bottom corner. Riverside never gave up and went close to equalising before Fulwell doubled their lead with a swift counter attack. Credit where its due and the lads pulled a goal back from a long ball from Alex and Jack beat the oncoming keeper to give us a hope. The last minute Jacob saw a free kick heading into the top corner, only to see the keeper pull off a magnificent save, and then Joe went close with a penalty area scramble that saw Fulwell clear their lines to save the points for them.

Riverside RAR 0-2 Easington Colliery AFC
FIRST GAME BACK IN PREMIER !!!
Riversides first game back in the Premier League ended in defeat but they were no means overawed by the step up in class and probably deserved a point from their first game. The extra second of speed and quick thinking caught out the lads within the first couple of minutes and Easington took advantage and opened the scoring. Riverside rallied well and had a few great chances to equalize but were kept out by some good goalkeeping and defending. The second half was similar but as the RAR was just about getting there Easington countered and secured all three points with a clinical finish. Lessons were there to be learnt but there was enough in this game to see the boys have nothing to worry about and will adapt fast to the quicker game of the Premiership.

THE RAR SECURE PROMOTION TO PREMIER LEAGUE !!!!
Riverside secured promotion to the Premier League with seven points from a possible nine. The boys needed to win the first game to make sure and they set about to do just that with an emphatic 3-0 win. Goals in the first half from Joe Armstrong and Jack Wilkie eased any pressure that was there, but at the age of ten do they really feel any or is it just us parents that do. The first half saw two milestones being reached with Joe hitting his 30th and Jack his 25th goals of the season, a tremendous achievement but they would be the first to acknowledge their team mates who make all this possible as if you do not concede any goals and close down opponents as we do then it makes it easier to go forward and score these goals. Joe added another in the second half to make it three nil and the boys could now relax and enjoy the remaining two games.
The second game saw Callum start on the left wing and he acquitted himself well in a first half destroyed by the windy conditions. Both sides went close so nils apiece was probably a fair result at the interval, the second half saw Ethan being introduced in a more advanced role from his usual left back position but it was Willington who took the lead with a well taken goal. The boys then attacked relentlessly and bombarded the Willington goal in search for the equaliser and it duly arrived from Ethan who stole a march on his defender and rammed it in to the back of the net. The lads had chances to win the game but on reflection a draw was a fair result.
Our last game saw us up against one of the only three teams to beat us this season, Byers Green. The lads were reminded about that statistic and made sure it would not be repeated. They took the game by the scruff of the neck and were rewarded with some fine football. Goals from Joe and Jack opened up a two nil lead and then another milestone was reached. Jacob added his name to the scoresheet and that was his 20th of the season, another fine achievement in a great season by everyone. There it was, the lads up in style and a well deserved 3rd place in the league.
In summary, a great season with three people hitting over 20 goals, seventeen clean sheets kept by defenders and goalkeepers, another great achievement by all involved. Well done to everyone involved including parents who are there week in week out whatever the conditions. We have had a great year season so far and will be playing football where you deserve to be...THE PREMIER LEAGUE....

HURRICANE RAR BAGS SIX POINTS
In conditions that free flowing passing football cannot be played in, Riverside took six points to near enough guarantee a place in next seasons premiership. In two hard fought games, goals in both games by Jack Wilkie was enough to secure the points but it was a team effort that got us there.
Some great goalkeeping from Lewis Hopper/Josh Fryer kept the teams at bay with two clean sheets which was backed up from some terrific defending in difficult conditions from the two already named and Ethan Stephenson. The midfield of Jacob, Callum, Daniel and Jack worked tirelessly to support both defence and attack and Joe up front ran into the ground for the cause. A brilliant team effort which means one win tomorrow would guarantee promotion so well done everyone for taking the pressure off tomorrows games.
Whiteleas Juniors 3-0 Riverside RAR
Riverside RAR 2-0 Deerness Valley Thunder
( Joe Armstrong, Jacob Carr )
24 February 2008
Riverside took three points today in their quest for Premiership football next season in a 2-0 win over Deerness Valley but came unstuck against league leaders Whiteleas, eventually going down 3-0 to a very good team. The boys entertained Whiteleas first and had their chances but a powerful run down the left saw the ball pulled back for their midfielder to slide home to open the scoring. Their second goal came from a misjudged clearance and the striker went through one on one before calmly adding the second. The lads raalied well in the second half and took the game to the leaders but it was a breakaway which saw them wrap up the points with their third goal of the game. The boys applied themselves much better in the second half and closed the ball down well preventing the opposition time on the ball and were unlucky to concede the third.
The second game saw Joe up against his former team and he duly obliged with a goal assisted by some great work out wide by Jack. The ball was fizzed in and like all good goalscorers Joe was their to turn it in at the back post. Jacob added a second with a superb finish and the points were in the bag. Some great defending from the lads at the back saw us keep a clean sheet which is great as with only five games to go we need to win at least three for promotion to the premier League.
NEXT WEEK : GAMES SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

Consett Missiles 2-3 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong 2, Jacob Carr )
Riverside RAR 4-0 City of Durham Titans
( Jack Wilkie 2, Joe Armstrong, OG )
RIVERSIDE SHOOT DOWN MISSILES
Riverside got the six points today as their rivals dropped points on the run in for promotion to the Premier League. Riverside had a difficult first game on paper as their first opponents were victorious in their first meeting so the boys knew it would be a tough start. It proved to be as Consett took the lead within the first 3 minutes with a super strike into the corner. Riverside battled back well and a fine pass from Jack saw Joe level the game with a well taken finish. Consett then retook the lead with a fantastic shot from 20 yards into the top corner but these lads do not let their heads go down and they bounced back just before half time with a fizzer of a strike from Jacob to again draw level at 2-2. The second half saw the game ebb from one way to another with either team looking dangerous on the break. Some great defending by Ethan and Josh kept the Missiles at bay and Lewis in goal was making some superb saves and bravely diving at attackers feet. Daniel came on for Callum in the second half and it was the RAR who took the lead with another great goal from Joe. The boys could have extended their lead if it was not for some great goalkeeping from the Consett keeper and they also snatched a draw at he death but were unable to do so. Another great game and credit to both sides for some great football.
The second game saw us play lowly City of Durham but last time these two teams met the points were shared. The lads proved today it would not happen again as they survived a couple of early scares before Jack was set free by Jacob down the wing who then hammered it into the bottom corner for the lead. Jack quickly doubled the advantage before Joe added a third to put the game out of reach of the Titans. The fourth game saw some great wing play and as the ball was being passed across the goalmouth an unfortunate defender turned it into his own goal to give the boys a four nil win and six points for the day.
The boys moved up to third in the league as Lambton were held to a draw and Boldon also lost ground as they lost one nil to South TYneside.

10 GOALS IN LEAGUE RESTART
The first games of 2008, after a hefty lay off due to the enforced winter break, saw two five goal thrillers which both could have probably gone either way.
First game was against Byers Green and the boys started brightly, passing the ball around nicely and created several chances to take the lead. However, it was Byers who stole the march and scored after a quick counter attack which two great passes across the park in what was probably there first attack of the game. Riverside responded well and Jack went on a superb run, beating several opponents and then buried it in the bottom corner. This should have been enough to give the boys a wake up call but it was not to be and Byers scored twice more to give them a 3-1 lead. Joe reduced the deficit with a few minutes to go with a clinical finish and the RAR nearly snatched a point at the death but the ball was saved on the line. It was not to be but credit to Byers green who gave us a great game.
Our second game saw us up against our friends from Boldon and this fixture always provides an entertaining game for the supporters. Two goals in the first half from Jack, his 20th of the season, and Joe, his 25th of the season saw the boys on there way to a half time score line of 2-0. Unfortunately, Boldon did not think that and scored 2 goals in the last 3 minutes of the half to give them the share of the points at half time. Riverside had bossed the game till then and can count themselves unlucky but the second half saw a great response from all the players and with the clock ticking Jacob picked up the ball and drove forward, his shot was to strong and dipped just before the keeper got control of the ball and it rolled into the net for the winner, cue wild celebrations on the pitch by all players. The boys saw out the remaining minutes and grabbed 3 valuable points.
Some great performances of the day was Lewis, who is deputising in goal, pulled off some great saves, Josh and Ethan looking strong at the back and distributing the ball well, Jack and Jacob, back amongst the goals and carrying on from where the left off last year, Joe, who does an admiral job leading the line, scoring his two goals and slipping back into left midfield to help out his team mates. Callum and Daniel, who with more matches under there belts are looking stronger all the time and Alex who was missing at his dads and is slotting in superbly now with his team mates.
NEXT WEEK : DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
08 December 2007
Riverside RAR 2-1 Washington Juniors
( Joe Armstrong, Jacob Carr )
South Tyneside Phoenix 0-1 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong )
THE RAR OF THE PHOENIX !!!
Riverside got back to two wins from two in today’s fixtures at Washington and made it nine wins from the last ten games. There first game was against Washington Juniors and the boys were in superb form from the off. The lads had a couple of half decent chances before Joe found himself one on one with the keeper who the n kept his nerve and buried it passed the oncoming keeper. Jacob then added a rasping volley from outside the box and game was as good as over. The second half saw Washington have more shots on target but Daniel was up for the all and looked very assured. However they did pull one back late on but not after Riverside had a goal disallowed for not crossing the line, the referee did explain afterwards he was not 100% sure it had crossed the line so I suppose he could not give it. The boys held on and then entertained the Phoenix in the second game.
The last time these two teams met the scoreline was nils apiece so we expected another close game. The boys made all the running from the off and came close several times to scoring the opener. Phoenix looked dangerous when they counter attacked as their striker looked pretty nifty up front but was well shackled by Lewis and Ethan who are looking strong at the back. Half time was 0-0 and all the lads were told was to continue as we had been playing and they will get the goal. With seven minutes to go Josh entered the game for Callum, who is looking stronger every game, and Joe went back up front with Jack back to the right. Jacob won the ball in the middle and passed out left to Josh. Josh then beat two men with some great footwork and curled a cracking shot which rebounded off the post to Joe. The ball was slightly to the side of him so after sorting his feet out quickly slotted the ball home to give the boys the lead much to the delight of the parents and players alike.
A hard game to win but a deserved win, credit mind to the opponents as they made it hard for us and gave us a good test which at the end we were up to. Well done boys !!!!
01 December 2007
Lambton Lions 1-2 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong, Jack Wilkie )
Riverside RAR 1-4 SAFC 24/7
( Jack Wilkie )
RAR PURRING BUT NOT ROARING !!
Riverside had mixed fortunes today but probably deserved four points instead of the three they gained. The first game saw them up against our rivals for promotion Lambton Lions and the boys if anything gave to much energy into the game which as a manager I cannot complain about at all. The boys took the game to Lambton from the first minute and nearly saw Joe open the scoring after some great football from the back through the midfield. When the goal came it was worth it, Jacob fed the ball to Jack out right who then cut inside and just as the tackle was coming in the ball was slipped through to Joe who coolly slotted in on the advancing keeper. Jack then preceded to increase the lead with another great finish and the boys were in cruise control. The second half saw the defence of Lewis and Ethan come under more pressure as Lambton pushed forward for a goal and some handling by keeper Daniel kept the scoreline to 2 nil. With three minutes to go the referee bizarrely gave a penalty to the surprise of everyone and Lambton then made it 2-1. This gave them a massive lift but the boys held on for a well deserved win. Afterwards the boys were commented on by the opposing manager on how well the pass the ball around, a comment which was well received as its nice for outside people to praise the team.
The next game was slightly different but not for the first twenty minutes as I thought we were the better team and deserved to be in the lead. SAFC 24/7 took the lead within the first minute but the boys battled back well and equalised through a fine strike by Jack. The game went end to end with some great chances from both teams but as Riverside were getting on top in the second half, 24/7 broke and took the lead, they added a quick third with a rebound from the referee which allowed them to break again and by this time the boys were tired from the work rate prior to this and SAFC added a fourth goal to make the scoreline look more comprehensive than actually it was.
The lads had put loads of hard work into the first game especially and in the first twenty minutes of the second game so it was not surprising to see them tire towards the end. It was great to see that attitude and it will be what is needed every game if we are to succeed in the Premiership.
Next week : Washington Juniors and South Tyneside Phoenix

Easington District Merlins 0-2 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong, Jacob Carr / Joe Armstrong )
Riverside RAR 2-0 Lumley FC Aplha
( Joe Armstrong, Jack Wilkie )
THE MAGIC CONTINUES !!
Riversides knights of the round table came up against Merlin in the first of two games today and the boys weaved some lovely spells especially in the first half as they enjoyed a majority share of the match. Callum started his second game in two weeks as Alex was suffering from a bout of the cold ( man flu to all males ) but still showed loads of character in the second half when entering the game. RAR have started to look dangerous with some great first time passing when needed whilst still entertaining with some good old one on one dribbling which excites the supporters. The first goal came from just that as Jack dribbled through the midfield and then just did a simple pass to Joe who calmly slotted home for the lead which was the score at half time. Easington came out for the second half and took the game to us but some great defending from Lewis and Ethan and a couple of fine stops from Daniel kept them at bay. The second goal was interesting, who scored ? well, not going to dwell to much on this as Andrew said on the touchline, 3 points to Riverside is the most important thing not who scores and I totally agree with that comment hence why both names are shown above. Prior to the goal we missed our third consecutive penalty so roll on 11 as side when the goals are much bigger. The game finished two nil and was probably just about fair.
Our second game of the day saw us up against Lumley and the same scoreline at the end of two nil. Alex felt well enough to start the game and came in left side of midfield as Riverside dominated the game from start to finish. However, at half time the scoreline was still 0-0 as the stand in keeper for Lumley was absolutely outstanding as the lads peppered his goal. Joe hit the post, Jacob hit the crossbar and then Jack followed up and again hit the cross bar all in the space of a minute. Ethan went just wide and Lewis was backing up the midfield with some superb runs forward. Daniel in goal looked confident with every ball and watched many a shot go just wide. Callum came on for the struggling victim of man flu at half time, a note for Alex it gets worse when you get older mate and your missus still expects the same jobs to be done, and set up the first goal with a lovely through ball to Joe who nonchantly just slided it past the oncoming keeper to give the boys the lead. The game was finished by a great run by Jack who put his shot across the keeper and clinched the points. All players were again outstanding from defence to attack with 2 more clean sheets for the defence and Daniel, some free flowing football in midfield and attack with some great finishing thrown in as well. A good weekend but next week the big guns are back to do battle against.
Next week : Lambton Lions and SAFC 24/7 Reds

Durham Athletic 2-3 Riverside RAR
( O.G, Jacob Carr, Joe Armstrong )
Riverside RAR 8-3 Houghton Boys Tigers
( Joe Armstrong 3, Jacob Carr 3, Jack Wilkie 2 )
THE RAR ROAR AGAINST TIGERS !!
Riverside continued their good form with two more wins this morning in wintry conditions. With Josh laid up with a virus and Alex representing his school at an athletics meeting Daniel and Callum made their first competitive starts for the club in the league. Riverside started strongly against Athletic and had several attempts to score early on and when the deadlock was finally broken it was like a pinball machine in the Athletic box. Jack broke down the right and laid a cross into the box which took several deflections and then when a Durham player attempted to clear it rebounded into the goal of a defensive player to give RAR a one nil lead. Durham came back into the game well and hit a deserved leveller with a lovely shot into the bottom corner, this seemed to wake up the boys a second time and they re-took the lead with a wicked shot from Jacob to give them a 2-1 half time lead. The second half saw Riverside go close several times but it was Joe who made the score 3-1 albeit by the keepers attempts to save it. This should have been made easy from then but credit to Durham as their striker raced full length of the field to reduce the deficit to make it squeaky bum time at the end. RAR held out and deserved the three points at the end but it was a gutsy performance from Athletic who gave a good account of themselves.
The second game of the day saw the boys play Houghton who bossed the first five minutes of the game and took a deserved lead, the boys then went on the offensive and saw quickfire goals from Joe, Jack and Jacob restore the lads confidence giving them a 3-1 half time lead. Jacob then added his second of the day before Houghton pulled one back to make it 4-2. Joe, playing striker for the second game, scored 2 more to complete his hat trick made it 6-2 before Houghton pulled back again with a well taken goal. The boys were not to be done and Jack scored a great left footed lob and Jacob beat four men to score his hat trick as well as the final score was 8-3 to Riverside. 2 wins, 6 points and we look forward to next week.

Deerness Valley Thunder 0-6 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong 2, Jack Wilkie, Jacob Carr, Alex Waterman, Daniel Cooke )
Riverside 3-1 Durham County
( Joe Armstrong 3 )
THE RETURN OF THE RAR !!!!
Riverside stole Deerness’s thunder in the first of two wins this morning as the RAR put recent form behind them and got their promotion push back on track. In a must win game Riverside attacked from the first whistle and were rewarded when Joe, who was playing striker today, scored the opener after only three minutes on the clock. The second followed soon after when Jacob blasted in the second to make the game safe, something that had not really happened lately. The boys could relax and when Jack made it three before half time with a shot cum cross everyone was all smiles again. With a rearguard of Lewis and Ethan today, Daniel in goal was rarely troubled and Alex was providing great support on the left of midfield to give great balance to the team. The second half saw the lads thoroughly enjoy themselves and when Joe scored his second of the game and his tenth of the season this was the time to give some action to the subs Josh, Callum and Daniel. Josh fitted back into his natural position of right back after running of his ankle problem but it was Alex who scored his first competitive goal of the season, re directing a header into the top corner. Callum and Dan had some great touches on the ball and it was Dan who was felled in the box for a penalty. All his teammates shouted at me to let Dan take it and he duly obliged albeit from the rebound showing remarkable composure when some kids might have stopped disappointed. The final scoreline was six nil and all squad players played an important part in the victory.
The second game saw us play Durham County and for the second time today Riverside attacked from the first whistle. Joe, who had been taking advice from his old man in between games, most have been listening as he scored two quick fire goals to wrap up the points within the first ten minutes of the game. The half time score off two nil could have been greater if not for some finishing just passed the post and safe hands by the County keeper. Josh came on for the start of the second half to give Joe a breather and it was County who pulled one back. A through ball saw the County striker one on one with Daniel and the striker just managed to sneak it past him to reduce the deficit. Joe re-entered the game on the left wing and after some fine passing football, the ball found it self on Joes left peg and he rammed it home for his hat trick and fifth goal of the day and thirteenth of the season. It was nice to get the confidence back and although I’ve said it once already everyone played their part today and can be proud of the way they have played today.

3 November 2007
City Of Durham Titans 1-1 Riverside RAR
( Ethan Stevenson )
Riverside 0-3 Consett Missiles
RAR STUNG BY AN EXOCET !!!!
Riverside took just the one point today as the chances went begging. In the first game Riverside had all the early chances but it was a swift counter attack which saw City of Durham take an early lead after just six minutes. Riverside have the belief to come back after recent games and they did just that, the ball broke to Ethan a full 25 yards from goal and without one second hesitation the ball was hit with such precision the ball was in the back of the net without the keeper even moving. The best thing was when you are stood behind the shot you knew it was flying in as soon as it left his boot.
Unfortunately, the boys then dominated the game but frustration grew in search for the winner and I thought the lads were probably trying to hard for that elusive goal and needed to relax a little as they attacked wave after wave. It was not to be and the points were shared.
The second game we never got going except for the first five minutes when we could have two up. Consett scored a goal ought of nothing and never looked back. They added a quick second and we never looked like scoring after that. The second half saw a spirited fight back after a few choice words but it was the Missiles who added a third and inflicted Riversides heaviest defeat in the Russell Foster league.

Boldon Colts United 1-1 Riverside RAR
( Lewis Hopper )
RIVERSIDE HOP TO A DRAW !!!!!
Riverside had only the one game today and what a cracker it was against our friends from Boldon. Last season’s meeting saw the lads from Boldon edge a close encounter with a first minute goal and they took the lead again in this game within the first minute. Some sleek passing and no tackles going in resulted in RAR being one down before half the players had even touched the ball. Riverside responded magnificently and attacked the Boldon goal in search of the equaliser with Joe and Jack working the flanks with pace and trickery, Lewis, upfront, was holding the ball up with some nice touches and laying the ball off well to his team mates all being backed up in the centre by Jacob with some nice pass and go’s and great tackling.
Boldon also went looking for a second which might have killed the game off but when they thought they were through they found themselves up against Josh and Ethan at the back who put in some timely interceptions to prevent the second goal.
The next goal was always going to be important and it went to the boys in yellow. Jack burst through a couple of tackles and played a lovely ball through to Lewis who turned and buried the ball into the corner for his 30th competitive goal for the club and his eighth of the season. The half time score saw the game tied at ones apiece.
The second half saw the same as the first with both teams creating chances to take the lead. Boldon were awarded a dubious hand ball outside the area which came to nothing but when the same thing happened on their penalty box the referee had no option but to award a penalty. Unfortunately, the ball was struck well but the keeper stood firm and saved it even though he was two yards of his line. Boldon then found some energy from that and if it was no for some heroic goalkeeping from Daniel, who pulled of two cracking saves at the end, Boldon might have nicked a winner, which in my eyes would not have been deserved. Two great teams in the making shared the points and surely will grace the premiership next season. Lets hope so for the sake of football……..

Whiteleas Juniors 1-0 Riverside RAR
Riverside RAR 1 – 1 Willington Blues
( Jacob Carr )
RIVERSIDE FEELING THE BLUES
Riverside’s first game saw them up against the form team with Whiteleas winning all 12 of their games so far in the league. The boys gave an excellent account of themselves and on reflection a draw probably would have been a fair result. Whiteleas scored early on when a shot that looked like it was going wide was unfortunately sliced into our own net by the attempted clearance. It was hard to bare but these things happen in football ( where have we heard that before ). Credit where credit is due, the boys responded magnificently and put Whiteleas on the back foot with several attacks and going close on a few occasions. Whiteleas also had some good chances and the game saw two good attacking teams going for it which was a great advert for Division One. The game ended 1-0 and all we hope for is that next season this is a Premiership match as both teams deserve to be in there on merit.
Our second game saw us in my opinion 2 points dropped as RAR took the lead early on through Jacob Carr with another tremendous strike from outside the box, but failed to capitalise on this and were punished just before half time when a through ball saw the Willington striker one on one with Daniel and the striker coolly placed it in the bottom corner for the equaliser. The boys had put so much into the first game but dug deep and saw several late attempts stopped by the Willington defence or just past by the far post. Still it was another point dropped and looking at the results Sunday morning with a cuppa I was happy to see us still in third place in the league. Next week we entertain fourth place Boldon Colts which if the same as last season will be a cracker. Be there !!!!!!!!!!!
Next week : Boldon Colts United
PS We now have eight going to Blackpool next year for our end of season trip in the Fleetwood Cup so I will be booking us up some time this week.

RIVERSIDE STAY THIRD
On a day, looking at the fixtures, Riverside knew they had to win both games to remain in contention as all the top four had games on paper they were expected to win. Riverside got off to a flyer in their first game against TEF or TCR as they were being shouted at when a corner was given within the first two minutes of the game. The ball flew into the top corner of the goal direct from Jacks kick which may have nicked a slight deflection on the way. In a nutshell, who cared, the boys were one up and looking lively. How it remained one nil was hard to believe as the boys were bossing the game and then it was the opposition who scored the next goal much to the delight of about six women who were stood on the touchline kicking every ball. The half time whistle blew for the score line of ones apiece and Riverside had to re group. Chances came and went in the second half and should have been awarded a penalty that the referee missed and it was TEF who then took the lead as the ball landed nicely at his feet and the striker calmly slotted into the bottom corner to give them a 2-1 lead with only eight minutes left. As we approached the last five minutes Joe broke down the left wing and after a couple of rebounds the ball found the back of the net to make it 2-2 much to the delight of everyone thinking at least we had rescued a point. The last minute and with everyone expecting the draw the ball broke kindly to Jack in their half and after a few steps forward he struck the ball which caught a wicked deflection to wrong foot the keeper and their it was the winner. At the final whistle the balls were all smiles and the parents had aged visibly.
The second game saw us in a local derby with neighbours Waldridge Park and saw the line up of the team slightly different as we continue to develop the boys into different positions which will give us much more flexability when we do actually need to make changes due to injuries etc. Joe started as a striker for the first time with Riverside as Lewis slotted into full back. Both lads did themselves proud and if called upon again can rely on the experience they have gained from this. Alex continued to impress and is getting stronger every game whilst the ever dependable Ethan kept out most attacks he was up against. Daniel kept another clean sheet and Jack and Jacob ran themselves into the ground. When entered the game Josh was his reliable self and Callum and Scott both put in some useful challenges for the cause. Anyway back to the game…the lads did the same again and scored within the first couple minutes with a fabulous strike from Jacob, a quick throw in saw Jacob lob the keeper from the touchline which left the keeper no chance. RAR hit the bar twice and Ethan put a fizzler of a shot just over. The boys were in cruise control and really should have scored more than they did and if it wasn’t for a great tackle at the end by Alex all their hard work could have come undone.
Still, 2 wins and six points !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

South Tyneside Griffins 0 - 3 Riverside RAR
( Joe Armstrong, Jack Wilkie, Jacob Carr )
Riverside RAR 0 – 0 South Tyneside Phoenix
RIVERSIDE TAKE FOUR POINTS FROM TYNESIDE
Riverside played both sides from South Tyneside and took four points out of a possible six when really it should have been all six. The first game saw a Riverside team with enforced changes as Josh was missing after badly damaging his arm at school, thankfully, it wasn’t broken as first suspected and he should be returning sooner rather than later. The changes saw Lewis drop into the right back position, Jack up front, Joe switching flanks and Alex starting out on the left wing. With so many changes it was great to see the lads get off to a flyer with a goal in the first 2 minutes which shows great flexibility between the boys. A shot cum cross from Jack saw Joe steal in at the back post for the first goal and his seventh of the season. The game saw some great challengers from both Ethan and Lewis in defence and some tasty tackles from Jacob in the middle of the park and it wasn’t long before Jack added a second and his tenth of the campaign to give the RAR a commanding lead. The second half saw the boys carry on their domination of the game and it added a third from Jacob and also his seventh of the game. Daniel, Josh and Scott all entered the play and could have added more goals but it was not to be on this occasion. Daniel in goal kept another clean sheet and showed his continued improvement in coming off his line and clearing up any dangerous moments.
The next game saw a very frustrating half hour as Riverside laid siege on the Phoenix goal but it was apparent by the line up that the Phoenix were not going to be to adventurous as from kick off there was three defenders. As the game continued this soon became five as they could see the finish line and one point. Riverside even half way through the second half had the luxury of just having one defender. There goalkeeper in the first half saved loads but spilled them, in the second half he held everything which was even more frustrating and every shot was blocked by either the defender or the woodwork. It was not to be but it was still two clean sheets and four more points back to the Premiership. The lads deserved all six points but this is want makes football interesting.

Washington Juniors 0 - 4 Riverside RAR
( Lewis Hopper, Jack Wilkie, OG, Josh Fryer )
Riverside RAR 0 – 2 SAFC 24/7 REDS
RIVERSIDE SLIP TO FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT
In today’s two games at Washington, Riverside slipped to their first league defeat of the season but continue to pressure the leaders with a resounding four nil win against Washington Juniors.
Whilst Joe was enjoying his 2 mile run, not sure if I would call it enjoyable though, the rest of his team mates were enjoying mixed emotions. The first game was the high with Lewis scoring to put the RAR ahead after nearly 10 minutes gone which were followed in quick succession by strikes by Jack and an unfortunate own goal . The second half continued from the first and Josh scored his first goal of the season with a header from a corner.
Riverside then encountered a very pumped up SAFC team who gave the lads no time to settle into their passing game. Several bruising tackles were being made in a first half that was goalless but probably the most entertaining as it was a close game. SAFC played with three defenders at the back and relied on counter attacking football which proved effective for them in the long run. The two goals came in a five minute purple patch for them, the first from a corner, unmarked at the back post and the second on the break. Riverside looked lively when putting two strikers up front but it was not to be. Still, 7 wins from 8 is a great start and a start which I am very proud of.

Riverside RAR 4 – 1 Lambton Lions Tornado’s
( Lewis Hopper 2, Jacob Carr, Jack Wilkie )
Lumley Alpha FC 1 - 3 Riverside RAR
( Jack Wilkie, Joe Armstrong, Lewis Hopper )
TORNADO HITS WASHINGTON
In a week where Tornado’s were causing damage across parts of Britain, Riverside had to face their own Tornado from Lambton in their fifth match of the season. The lads started slowly and within two minutes had conceded their first goal of the season as Lambton took an early lead. If anything this seemed to calm the lads down and they started passing the ball from defence through the park and this reaped benefits as Lewis slotted in the equaliser mid-way through the half. In an entertaining game both sides could have scored again but it was Jacob who scored an unstoppable shot to give the RAR the lead at half time.
The second half started with the instructions of keep at tight at the back and get a third goal, and this they did with a clinical finish from Jack into the bottom corner for a 3-1 lead. This ended the game as a contest and even though Lambton went close several times, Lewis added a fourth to make the score line look impressive even if this was the lads hardest game of the season so far.
Our second game was another win for Riverside who remain unbeaten this season but are now second on goal difference behind Whiteleas. The boys took the lead when Jack scored with an emphatic strike for his eighth of the season and this was followed by two more goals, one from Joe and a third of the day from Lewis. Lumley scored an incredible consolation goal near the end that brought applause from both sides.
The players have had a great start to the season with a 100% unbeaten record and next week entertain third place SAFC 24/7 Reds in what should be a cracking game.

RIVERSIDE’S Magic Bags Two More Wins
Riverside continued their great start to the season with two more fine wins and also two more clean sheets. The first of today’s games was against the wizardry Merlins of Easington but it was Riverside who showed the magic first with a move that was worked well on the left from Lewis Hopper and Joe Armstrong who combined really well for RAR’s opening chance and with Jack Wilkie and Jacob Carr linking up well on the right, the chances were coming from all over the pitch. They were backed up, once again, superbly by Ethan Stevenson and Josh Fryer in defence and with two more clean sheets for keeper Daniel MacCallum things were looking good.
Riverside took a little longer to settle from last weeks explosive start but when they did all the goals came at once. First, Joe continued his good form with the opener, followed up by two goals from Lewis giving the half time score a respectable 3-0 look. The second half continued with Riverside attacking, Scott Armstrong was introduced in attack and showed again he his learning from every game, Callum Davidson and Daniel Cooke both entered the fray and looked solid and distributed the ball well. The final score was 3-0 and we could look forward to playing the Tigers.
Riverside made it two wins today with a professional performance against Houghton who themselves had a couple of great chances to score. Lewis opened the scoring with his third of the season before Houghton had a great chance to equalise but luckily for us the ball flew over the bar. This was a wake up call for our lads and they responded well with another goal from Joe, his fifth of the season, which made the game relatively safe. The half time team talk mentioned we needed a third goal to be safe and Jacob duly obliged with his first of the day and sixth of the season. As in the first game all the subs were introduced to the action and as before never let anyone down with their enthusiasm to get stuck in.
Summary of the day was two more wins – two more clean sheets – twelve points from twelve and loads of confidence going into the games by everyone. What more can I ask for !!!!! Lets keep it going !!!!!

RIVERSIDE Ready And Ruthless !!!!!
Many people ask me what RAR stands for, and in today’s two games it was amended to Ready And Ruthless as the boys opened their new league account with some excellent passing football and fourteen goals.
The lads have been promoted to the first division but continued where they left off last season with some free flowing football. Although Riverside were without Nathan Cobain, who has departed to go in to his own age group, the squad was bolstered over the summer with Alex Waterman and Callum Davidson joining the team and the boys have settled in excellently over pre-season.
We entertained Durham Athletic in the first of today’s games. I asked the lads to be quick out the blocks so their fast passing would reap rewards and today they did just that. Barely two minutes on the clock and Jack Wilkie’s shot was too strong for the keeper and Jacob Carr was in the right place to tap in for his first of the season. Riverside maintained the early pressure and deservedly doubled their advantage with another goal by Jacob. With the defence looking strong the front four continued to dominate the game and in the second half Jacob completed his hat trick with a free kick from the half way line that flew into the top corner. With some fine link up play from Joe Armstrong and Lewis Hopper, who were running their socks of for the cause, Jack Wilkie got into the scoring act for Riversides fourth and then added two more quick goals for his hat trick with some mazy dribbling and cool finishing. All the subs were introduced to the game and it was Daniel Cooke, playing at right back, who scored the seventh and his first competitive goal for the club and the smile said it all. The final score was seven nil and the lads could take confidence into the next game.
Our next game was against Durham County and I think it’s fair to say it was a game that people were looking forward to as some of the players and parents had spent a good few years at Durham County in the past. Riverside, buoyed by the previous win, set about County with some breathtaking football and great passing. Within minutes, Jack, out on the right, had sent the ball across the box and at the back post Joe scored for his first of the season. Joe then doubled his tally for the season with another near identical goal and the game was as good as over. The lads were flying by now and every attack looked like they going to score and it wasn’t long before they did. Jack added to his tally for the day with a fine goal and then Joe Armstrong completed his hat trick for the fourth, Jack then added two more for another hat trick and Jacob finished it off before half time by making it seven nil. The second half continued as the first half finished, and but for the woodwork and some fine goalkeeping the score could have been greater. Riverside could have had more goals but the game was over and I was pleased with both performances in today’s games.
In summary, it was a fantastic goal feast, but also an amazing team performance and everyone contributed immensely. From the tireless running of Lewis who never gave the defenders a seconds rest to the fine defensive performance from Ethan and Josh who never let anything pass them by. Scott who is getting stronger every game although he took a knock to his knee yesterday, Callum and Daniel who are providing great support in whatever position they are asked to play. Alex who has slotted in excellently, making new friends along the way and has a great left foot and of course the keeper who has kept another two clean sheets to his name. A great start to the season but a long way to go yet……………
Next week : Easington District Merlins and Houghton Boys Tigers !!!
U10RAR On Tour At Wheatly Hill Football Tournament:
Next seasons Riverside Under 10’s won their second piece of silverware in just four months as they won the Wheatley Hill Football Tournament 2007 in torrential weather suited to the monsoon season away in the Far East somewhere. They scored an incredible 22 goals in 5 games, conceded only 2 and beat three premiership teams along the way.
Whilst Lewis and Ethan were topping up the tans abroad and Scott and Daniel were enjoying other activities elsewhere, Riverside used there full resources and invited Jack and Callum along from training for some useful first team experience and Ben who was loaned from our other Riverside team.
Our in-house weatherman, Neil, had predicted it would rain on Friday and was not to be proved wrong as the heavens opened for most of the morning and the scene was like the first day of Wimbledon, umbrellas everywhere. My own umbrella made a brief appearance until Bridget borrowed it and enough said. Damian even brought along a tent to save everyone from getting wet but unfortunately it was only big enough for two people at a time. Anyway back to the footie………….
Our first group game saw the lads up against Premiership opposition City of Durham and they soon set about them creating early chances but were denied by the woodwork and some good goalkeeping. They eventually broke the deadlock with a screamer of a goal and quickly added another to make it two nil by half time. Riverside had opportunities to increase their lead but it was City who pulled back a late goal to give them a slight chance but the lads held out and took a well deserved three points. The second game saw them against Shotten Jets and the boys were brimming full of confidence and scored an early goal, Andrew then mentioned it would nice to score another by half time and the boys must have heard him and duly obliged, however, not with one goal but four more, as the lads made it five nil by half time. Two more goals were added in the second half and Shotten did manage to score themselves to make the final shoreline 7-1. The final game of the group saw the lads entertain the hosts Wheatley Hill Rockets and with top place assured the boys relaxed and enjoyed themselves. The referee said the score was six nil at the end but I thought it was eight, not like it really mattered anyway, but the football played was of the highest quality and the lads thoroughly deserved to go through to the semis with a match against Premiership boys Shotten Sharks to look forward to.
So, into the semis and it was Riverside who smelt blood as they went about Premiership Shotten with a point to prove. The first half was all one way as Riverside pegged them back into their own half and the passing and movement was exceptional for boys of nine years of age. Two great goals were scored by half time to give them an unassailable lead at half time and the second half carried on from the first as Riverside added another great goal to make it three nil and march into the final to play City of Durham again.
The final was a closer affair than the group match with City playing some good football in the first half and went close several times to scoring. Riverside responded well themselves and had a couple of decent chances but by half time score was tied at 0-0. The second half saw the lads fired up as they went for the winning goal, and after several chances, the goal they deserved finally came with about three minutes to go. City tried to respond but it was too late and as the final whistle went, it started wild celebrations both on the pitch and touchline. As the kids went up to collect their winner’s trophies the sun decided to shine on the proceedings, a fitting end to a great day.
The kids were marvellous today from Daniel in goal, who was a spectator for most of the day, but came to his teams rescue with some great saves late on in the tournament, Josh and Nathan at the back for some solid defensive work and amazing distribution, the 3J’s in midfield, Jack, Jacob and Joe, who never stopped running all day and scored some great goals, the two new kids, Callum and Jack, who played there part in the days success and would have gained some great experience, and finally Ben, who is an extremely intelligent footballer and he will probably be reliving his winning goal in the final for weeks to come.
A great day out finishing with deserved success. Well done to all concerned………..
